DG’s First Int’l Day of Yoga

The First International Day of Yoga in DG

The International Day of Yoga, on June 21, was unanimously declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) back in December 2014. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi first proposed the event and it was supported by 175 members of Parliament. The June 21 date was chosen for summer solstice being the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.

Yoga is both a mental and physical exercise that originally comes from India. The word “yoga” originates from Indian Sanskrit words ”yug” or ”yuj,” and means consistent, combine or harmonious. Today, hordes of people around the world perform many different styles of yoga. It not only helps the body, but also creates connections with others. Dongguan joins a few other Chinese cities already celebrating the holiday where people gather, do some yoga and share different feelings about it.
