Emergency Hotline Hassled

According to Dongguan Public Security Bureau, from the nearly 2.5 million reports that were received in 2016 via the emergency hotline 110, over 37 percent of them were false. Lost a phone, a partner, a pet, a package, these kinds of calls for help have been disturbing the center’s work considerably.

Chen Jiahui has been an operator for six years and he confessed that he has received so many bizarre reports that he lost motivation to resolve them. Two months ago, he got a report from a man who was just released from prison that called multiple times and complained that he shouldn’t be sentenced so many years in jail. Every time Chen explained to him patiently, the man threatened if Chen couldn’t solve his problem, he would take revenge on them. Minutes after Chen hung up, 21 phones in the center rang continuously for half an hour, but each call only rang once. Under the influence of local police, the man finally stopped.

Here are the emergency situations when you need to call 110: criminal cases, public security cases, group incidents that endanger personal safety, property safety and public security, natural disasters, and other law infraction cases. Foreigners should note that the hotline also provides English services in case of emergency. Just don’t call 21 times.
