Bird Flu Attacked

Winter starts the high-risk season for human infected bird flu. Up until January, 14 human infections with avian influenza A (H7N9) virus were detected in Guangdong. Two people died, including an 80-year-old man from Shijie Town who was sent to Dongguan People’s Hospital on December 27 and a 75-year-old Hong Kong resident who succumbed to the virus on Christmas Day after visiting a market in Changping Town. Live poultry markets throughout the city were closed for one week from January 15 to 21. Spring Festival is the traditional occasion for consuming chicken—especially live, which are considered tastier than frozen ones. The bird flu has already affected sales.
