On January 16, Tsai Ing-wen was elected as the new leader of Taiwan.

On June 16, Shanghai’s Disneyland officially opened to a huge ceremony lasting for days.

美国总统选举 The U.S presidential election(měiguó zóngtǒng xuánjǔ)
On November 8, Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton to become president of the United States, which stunned the whole world.

人民币加入SDR Renminbi joined IMF’s SDR basket (rénmínbì jiārù SDR)
Being included in the SDR basket was seen as a big step for the Renminbi to become a world reserve currency.

二十国峰会 The G20 Summit(èrshí guó fēnghuì)
The 11th G20 Summit was held on September 4 in Hangzhou. The theme was “Building an innovative, invigorated, interconnected and inclusive world.”

英国脱欧 Brexit (yīngguó tuō ōu)
On June 23, voters in United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. The British Prime Minister David Cameron then announced his resignation. Theresa Mary May replaced him and became the second female Prime Minister in British history.

神舟十一号飞船 Shenzhou-11(shénzhōu shíyīhào fēichuán)
China’s sixth manned space mission selected two crews to rendezvous and dock with the Tiangong-2 space laboratory and gain experience from a long residence in space.

闺蜜 Best female friends (guīmì)
Park Geun-hye, the president of South Korea was exposed “having fallen under the spell of a religious cult.” A 60-year-old woman, Choi Soon-sil, a mysterious female friend of Park, is said to have influenced Park on everything.

TALKING POINTS A supplement for grammar practice

December is a month for summarizing the whole year. People make conclusions about their work and achievements, learn lessons from frustrations and walk out of sorrow and misfortune.

The “end” has different Chinese expressions.

They are 终 (zhōng), 末 (),
尾 (wěi),底 ().

终 end, eventually (zhōng)
终于 finally (zhōngyú)
最终 eventually (zuìzhōng)

你终于到家了! Finally, you are home!(nǐ zhōngyú dàojiā le!)

最终电影的主角死了。
Eventually, the main character died in the movie. (zuìzhōng diànyǐng de zhǔjué sǐ le.)

末 end, last ()
末日 doomsday (mòrì)

我们都不想看到世界末日。
We all don’t want to see the end of the world. (wǒmen dōu bùxiǎng kàndào shìjièmòrì.)

尾 end, tail (wěi)
尾巴 a tail (wěiba)
尾声 end (wěishēng)

小心!别踩到猫的尾巴。
Be careful! Don’t step on the cat tail. (xiǎoxīn! bié cǎidào māo de wěiba.)

小说的尾声营造出安详的氛围。
The end of the novel creates a peaceful atmosphere. (xiǎoshuō de wěishēng yíngzào chū ānxiáng de fēnwéi.)

底 bottom ()
月底 the end of a month (yuèdǐ)

这个月底我要去旅游。
I will go travelling at the end of this month. (zhège yuèdǐ wǒyào qù lǚyóu.)

Therefore, the end of the year could be年终 (niánzhōng),年末 (niánmò),年尾 (niánwěi) and 年底 (niándǐ).

CARTOON CHARACTERS Mnemonic devices that work

1216_model-mandarinHi there, 回 (huí) means “return.” Looking at the poker card, you can find it looks like water turning in circles. It keeps returning. 来 (lái) meaning “come” so 回来 is “coming back.”

Not only does 回 (huí) refer to physically turning back, but also mentally.

回报 means return or pay back in Chinese. (huíbào)
回复 means to reply. (huífù)

nin4 mei5 (年尾) The meaning of this word is the end of year. Nin4 (年) is the meaning of year. And mei5 (尾) means a tail. The tail of the year is nin4 mei5 (年尾).

It is the end of the year and the Spring Festival is coming. “年尾了,新年要来了” (nin4 mei5 liu5, san1 nin4 jiu3 lai4 liu5). For nin, take the tone slightly higher, then take mei to stay higher.
