DG Hits Asiad Record

1114_Scene_DG Hits Asiad RecordFour years ago during this time, Guangzhou was in full “go mode” with a few last days to prepare for the Asian Games, which, if you don’t know, is a multi-sport event matching top athletes from 45 Asian nations. As a part of those games, Dongguan hosted events in weightlifting as co-host. This year, Incheon, South Korea played the role of host country, but for Dongguan the 17th Asiad was another special event.

While China as a nation took the overall medal count, Dongguan clocked three gold, two silver and a bronze to mark the city’s best performance in as many as 24 years of competing in the games. Representing China in kayaking, basketball, football and the modern pentathlon, Dongguan suited 15 athletes.

Li Zhenyu of Humen Town took a bronze in the 1,000-meter doubles kayaking, while fellow townsman, Zhang Quan, seized gold in the 2,000-meter quadruple sculls, a group rowing competition. Playing on the women’s basketball team, the two members from Dongguan made up almost 20 percent of the 12 member team as Ding Yuan and Yu Dong helped the team to win silver medals. And last, but in no way the least, Guo Jianli from Machong Town showed that he was truly multi-talented. He won two gold medals, one in individual and one in group, in the modern pentathlon, an event that has athletes compete in swimming, fencing, show jumping and pistol shooting.
