There are perhaps many who know about the World Environment Day. June 5 is set aside for “positive environmental action” by the United Nations Environment Program, but lesser known is China’s national “Outdoor Cleaning Day” that happens annually on the first Sunday of June. Launched in 2012, it hopes to raise nationwide action in cleaning the outdoors. For the third consecutive year, along with 50 other cities, the Dongguan Volunteer Association organized a citywide outdoor campaign and promotion of environmental issues. Almost 10,000 volunteers spread out picking up trash in forest parks, public squares, streets and the Dongjiang River bank. Xu Jianhua, the secretary of Dongguan’s Municipal Committee of the CPC, together with other government leaders, joined in to clean up Qifeng Park.
