Two-Wheeled Crackdown

0514_Scene Brief_Two-Wheeled CrackdownThe numerous amounts of electric bikes on the streets of Dongguan show that rules have been bent for quite some time. The motorcycle ban, implemented in 2006, includes any motorized two-wheeled vehicle. This year electric bike riders may face serious challenges to their existence. The government has begun a crackdown campaign meant to last from April to November. Bike shops will no longer be allowed to sell electric bikes in the open. Patrols will be strengthened, especially around the areas where regional storehouses for express companies are located because many couriers use modified electric bikes or three-wheelers for deliveries. The full process of the destruction of old motorbikes must be videotaped to prevent them from going back to the market. Violations will be fined RMB 50.
