Dongguan has always enjoyed the flattering title, “home of the lychee.” The big, red sweet fruit hidden within a thin shell has encountered an agreeable growing season this year. “The output of lychee on my farm is almost doubled from last year,” said Ye Ganqiang, a lychee farmer in Hengli. Ye said that last winter was cold without much frost and this spring has been hot with an abundance of sunshine, which contributes to the harvest. According to the Dongguan Bureau of Agriculture, production of lychee is expected to exceed 20,000 tons this year. Xiegang, Huyangjiang, Dalang and Zhangmutou are the major growing towns. In the middle of May, lychee lovers will be able to enjoy the fresh fruit.
